Rogue Brewing – Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout

Published On August 4, 2015 | By Stephen Rubke | Anything Beer, Beer Reviews

I’ve had a tumultuous relationship with Oregon’s Rogue Brewing- they often produce beers with flavors and themes that sound amazing to me, but the result is bizarre and off target from my expectations.

Yet every couple of months, I find myself staring down a Rogue bottle that I’m compelled to try for reasons I can’t actually articulate. Not there is anything particularly unique about an oatmeal stout… But this one I hadn’t tried, and there wasn’t much else at the store to grab my attention.

Perhaps because it wasn’t donut or hot sauce themed, it was actually surprisingly good. The flip side of this is that oatmeal stouts have become kind of stale, in my opinion; not a lot of innovation or excitement happening in this genre. But this Shakespeare stuff manages to create a delicious and satisfying entry in the class.

It rises above the standard normally flatish flavored oatmeal stouts. It’s well rounded and has character. For rising above the crowd, I confidently score it 4/5. Now I just need Rogue to get the bacon donut beer right.

Currently I enjoy travelling around the country and searching out the local beers. Cheers!
